Not ready to buy an original but still want to own a piece of HeartScapes?
Corazon
A poem by Shifra Sonnenschein
My heart is broken and beating
And burning and breathing
And earning some green leaves
And flowers
Because growth is deceiving
And beauty is fleeting
And nature just follows a pattern
I’m healing and grieving
Working on believing
That the Universe has all the answers
She’s growing and breathing
Giving me the feeling
Of presence when I don’t understand her
This painting
Is about our place in the Universe. I’ve had an up and down relationship with the concept of God as it was presented to me. But nature doesn’t have to understand itself to exist. The concept of the Oneness of the Universe resonates with me. That we grow makes us a part of nature. That we have hearts makes us part of nature. Our sentience is spiritual, and it connects us all. We’re all one - all part of something bigger than ourselves. A flower pushing it’s way out of a vein may be painful- growth is deceiving in it’s pain. But it’s also beautiful. It’s natural. And it’s what makes us human.

Timeline
I began working on Cora on May 15, 2026. It’s definitely one of paintings that took me longest. There are so many little details and each took me a good amount of time. I was genuinely scared I would never complete it. I worked on it whenever I had a spare minute to paint a flower or a spare night to stay up. Eventually I finished the painting it July 19, 2026.
Painting playlist
I played lots of Harry Potter - I went through the fourth and fifth book on this painting. I also put on The Office and Long Story Short in the background when I wanted a bit of a change.
Easter egg
Almost every flower in this painting is a real flower I’ve taken pictures of over the years. There are lots of Baltimore wildflowers — I loved the idea of having wildflowers growing on my heart — and there are also flowers from Florida and Israel. I picked ivy and lavender from my neighborhood to copy. The blue forget-me-nots are from one of my favorite colored pencil drawings Forget Me Not. Also, the bird looks kind of like the Orioles mascot, and even though I don’t like sports and the Baltimore Orioles aren’t known for winning, I do love Baltimore and the home I’ve found here.
