I am not very good at writing happy poems

So this poem will not be happy

It will be wrapping itself through my veins

Around my fingers

And into my heart

Held by the present

By the effervescent

Heartbeat of presence

And the non relentless

Knowledge of endless

Warm red acceptance

This painting

Is about peace. Happiness is a fun and convenient emotion but it’s not automatically peaceful. Nor is it complex - which is why it’s so beautifully easy to experience. Peace does not require happiness— it does not require anything specific to be felt. It meets whatever is there and holds it with compassion. That’s why this is my favorite painting. Because you don’t have to feel anything you’re not. You just have to be kind to what you are feeling.

Timeline

I began working on Presence on January 4, 2026 and finished it on July 4, 2026. I spent countless hours simply gazing at it and countless more actually painting it. I loved creating and living with this painting so much.

Painting playlist

This painting took me so long that my music style changed throughout my painting it. In the beginning I was listening to my regular Halsey, Gracie Abrahams, and Ian McConnel and somewhere through it I got super into Young Miko and listened to little else for months.

Easter egg

During one of the many hours while I was staring at Presence, I was like - OMG she kind of looks like Moana! You don’t know how much I LOVE Moana. It is a movie all about the ocean. The ocean is a spiritual place for me and is where I am sure to feel the heartbeat of presence in the beauty and power of nature.
